D. Infectious Disease
The incidence of infectious disease in Lompoc is significantly below the state rate for
reported diseases in all categories except for giardiasis. The higher incidence of
giardiasis could be related to one of two factors according to Santa Barbara Communicable
Disease Control (SBCDC). First, not all counties or communities test for giardiasis,
therefore the state numbers may not represent the true rate of giardiasis. Secondly, there
is a high percentage of Hispanics in Lompoc many of whom have immigrated from Mexico,
where they may have had the disease prior to coming to the United States. Since Mexico
does not test for giardiasis the disease cannot be detected until tested in the United
States.
