II. Community Overview

A. The Service Area Definition

For purposes of the DRIS Initiative, the Lompoc service area is defined as that area comprising three zip codes; 93436, 93437 and 93438, including Mission Hills, Vandenberg Air Force Base, Vandenberg Village and Lompoc Valley. This area also matches the Lompoc District Hospital service area. Exhibit 2.1, which follows, is a map illustrating this area. Lompoc is located in Santa Barbara County and is situated ten miles from the coast. Lompoc lies West of Highway 101; with the cities of Santa Barbara to the South, and San Luis Obispo to the North. The Lompoc service area has a population of 63,064, which represents an increase of 9.7% from the population of 1990 (Claritas Inc.).

Along with significant growth, the Lompoc population reflects California’s ethnic and racial mix; but is slightly younger and poorer than the state as a whole.
