C. Public Health ServicesThe Imperial County Public Health Department role is to prevent disease and promote the health of the community. It is responsible for a wide variety of services including:
The Public Health Department does not provide direct primary care services to the public nor does it provide prenatal care, family planning, or preventive care. They do provide screenings and brief physical assessments (i.e.. blood pressure, cholesterol/blood sugar testing, pregnancy testing) and then refer patients for appropriate follow-up. Diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases are also provided. Table 6.5 summarizes the number of public health encounters as is available. As each section of the Department of Public Health may define "an encounter" differently, these numbers are not always comparable. Primary care services include care provided at the juvenile hall, the childrens receiving home, TB care, etc. Preventive care includes immunizations, CHDP exams, and senior citizen screenings. Environmental health encounters includes follow-up on any type of complaint, restaurant inspection, water treatment plant inspection, etc. Mental health and drug and alcohol encounters are services provided by the Imperial County Department of Mental Health Services.
Not reflected in this table is the large amount of community outreach that the Public Health Department undertakes. This includes significant numbers of community health presentations, including health fairs, school presentations, nutritional programs, and media and billboard efforts. It also does not include the activities of the public health laboratory. Previous | Table of Contents | Forward © CIRHM |
