Section IV. Data Reports

  1. Introduction
  2. This report presents data collected on Imperial County as part of the James Irvine Foundation’s Initiative "Developing Rural Integrated Communities." Faculty and staff from the University of California, Davis, Department of Family and Community Medicine served as the data consultants for this data collection and analysis effort. The team consisted of Robert C. Davidson, M.D., M.P.H., Project Director; Jane Fox-Garcia, Project Manager; Jennifer Cogswell, Research Assistant and Beate Danielsen, Ph.D., of Health Information Solutions of Menlo Park, CA.

    The data consultants were given a defined set of data items by the DRIS Initiative to collect on Imperial County. This was undertaken between July 1, 1997 and March 31, 1998. Every effort was made to obtain the most current data at a zip code level to provide the community with detailed information to which they may not have had previous access. Data was collected from both primary and secondary data sources. Key data sources include:

    • U.S. Census, 1990 and updates;
    • California Department of Finance, Population Estimates;
    • California Employment Development Division;
    • Improved Perinatal Outcome Data Management (a data system which integrates California hospital discharge data, Vital Statistics birth/infant death files, and U.S. Census data);
    • California Death Files (public use);
    • California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD)
      Hospital Discharge data
      Long-term Health Facilities data
      Home Health Agencies data
      Primary Care Clinics data
    • Arizona Office of Health Planning, Evaluation and Statistics - Hospital Discharge data;
    • California licensure information for health care providers;
    • Community surveys of Imperial County large employers and Imperial County physicians.

    These data were presented in a series of meetings with the Imperial County Community Health Council convened by the DRIS project, beginning in October 1997. Council member’s questions and comments led to further analysis and refinement of the data, resulting in a more precise understanding of the health care system in Imperial County.
